In Scotland in 2007, there were 2365 alcohol related deaths where an alcohol related condition was the underlying or contributory cause of death, the equivalent of 28 full double-decker buses.1

The average number of units of alcohol consumed by pupils who have drank in the last week was 13 units for 13 year olds and 16 units for 15 year olds. 2

How much to drink?

To reduce health risks from drinking alcohol, it is recommended that, for adults:

•  Males have no more than 3-4 units a day, with a maximum of 21 weekly

• Females have no more than 2-3 units a day, with a maximum of 14 weekly

All adults should have at least two alcohol free days per week.
There are no recommended safe limits for young people (under 18).

Although alcohol does not contain fat, it does contain calories, and also can stimulate the appetite.
It takes the body approximately one hour to process one unit of alcohol.
