Few young people nowadays wait until they're 18 to drink. By the time they reach 15, more than 8 out of 10 have already tried alcohol₁.
Young people are drinking more and drinking more often. Many young people drink to get drunk (binge drinking).
Young people drink for a variety of reasons including wishing to demonstrate their maturity and to test their limits. Although young people may at times drink in an uncontrolled way, most will not go on to develop serious problems. However young people who are drunk can do very dangerous things because of the effects of severe intoxication, such as being victims to accidents.
Improving the health of our communities is everyones responsibility. We all have a role to play in providing information and increasing attention to alcohol on the public and community agendas.
